Meditation
What is Meditation?
While writing this page I am listening to
There are many discussions on this question. What is the real definition of meditation? Who knows.
For the purposes of this website which is for healing, I will define it as a mental discipline which helps to make our mind calm and peaceful.
There are so many activities that could be called meditation. Any activity you choose to do with your whole heart, where you are completely engaged and focused is a form of meditation. Anytime you are being fully present to what is happening and what you are doing and thinking right now, can be called meditation. For example, drinking a cup of coffee and truely savouring the flavour, the texture, the cup in your hand, the feeling as it enters your body, being really present to the sensations, is a meditation. Or, washing your hands, feeling the water on your skin, the sensations of your hands against eachother, this is meditation.
Having said that, the best form of meditation, is to be still and listen. Listen to your heartbeat. Listen to the silence amongst the noise. Listen to the noise in your head. Listen to your breathing. Soon after practicing the stillness and the listening, you will find there is no longer a noise in your head, and from this space, you are now in control of your mind.
Why do we need meditation for self-healing?
Meditation is a means of controlling your mind. If you are able to control your mind then you are able to control the thoughts and beliefs that flow through your mind. Your thoughts and beliefs become your actions and your words, therefore your thoughts and beliefs become your world.
Meditation aids you in becoming aware of what these thoughts are and helps you to eliminate them.
Is there any scientific backing for meditation?
Dr Herbert Benson, a cardiologist, has completed much research on the benefits of meditation. He found that meditation:
Increased activity in the frontal region of the brain related to reduced anxiety and a positive emotional state
Decreased blood pressure
Increased immunity
Slows breathing
Quietens the mind allowing positive thoughts to flow without resistance
